There’s probably no aging process more intricate than how our immune systems gradually make our bodies more defenseless. That’s what makes it one of the most fascinating and important frontiers of research in the world of human aging.
A team of Stanford University scientsts are the latest to join the hunt — and with great ambition. They’ve opened what they’re calling the Human Immune Monitoring Center. Their goal: Coming up with a battery of tests from a single blood sample that will yield a scorecard of the immune system’s functioning–a fundamental new biomarker of aging. If they succeed, they will have found new ways to keep us healthy now–and maybe 20 years later.
